Reborn in the 70s: The Fiery Daughter-in-law CH2

Chapter 2: This Man Is Her Husband

Sheng Anning was teary-eyed from the thick smoke when she heard the door and turned around to see a tall and upright figure at the door. She couldn't make out his face against the light.

However, from the original host's memory, she knew this was the original host's husband, Zhou Shixun.

His sudden appearance caught her off guard, and she hadn't figured out how to greet him.

Zhou Shixun quickly entered, put down his lunchbox, swiftly opened the doors and windows, and then went to check the stove. The dark coal had already smothered the flaming twigs.

Knowing that Sheng Anning wouldn't pay him any attention or initiate conversation, he silently picked up the fire tongs and began to relight the fire.

Feeling somewhat awkward, Sheng Anning stood up and stepped aside. As the dense smoke in the room cleared and the light brightened, she could clearly see the man's features.

His eyebrows and eyes were cool and clear, his nose straight, and his lips flat with a hint of seriousness and rigidity.

His skin was a very healthy wheat color.

Always critical in her tastes, Sheng Anning found Zhou Shixun's appearance and temperament to hit her aesthetic preferences exactly. However, she was not in the mood to engage in a love transcending time and space in this era but rather thought about how to improve her relationship with this man.

After all, to survive in this era, which was completely unknown to her, she needed this man's help.

While she was lost in thought, Zhou Shixun had rekindled the fire, the flames faintly visible in the stove, before he stood up and looked at Sheng Anning, who had been standing by the side all this time.

Surprised that Sheng Anning hadn't slammed the door and retreated to her room after his return, he noted her usually beautiful and fair face now covered in soot. He washed his hands at the basin by the door, changed the water, and added hot water from the thermos.

Then, he turned to Sheng Anning with a calm expression, "Do you want to wash up?"

Startled, Sheng Anning's eyes lit up in surprise, and she nodded repeatedly, "Yes, thank you."

Considering how the original host treated him, yet he still offered to pour water for her to wash her face, his demeanor was exceptional.

Sheng Anning, with bright eyes, smiled radiantly at Zhou Shixun and hurried over to wash her hands and face.

Zhou Shixun observed Sheng Anning quietly, noting it was the first time she had thanked him and even smiled at him, a complete departure from the norm. However, he wondered what she was plotting.

He went back to heating the lunchbox he had brought back from the unit's canteen by the stove and rolled up his sleeves to fetch a cabbage.

After washing her hands, Sheng Anning noticed a small round mirror hanging on the wall in front of the basin stand, reflecting her face covered in soot. No wonder Zhou Shixun suggested she wash her face; it was indeed a bit embarrassing.

She quickly washed her face, and looking in the mirror again, she saw her clean and pretty face. Surprisingly, the original host resembled her somewhat, but Sheng Anning, being nearly thirty and living a fast-paced life, appeared leaner and her skin less radiant than the original host's.

However, the original host often frowned and harbored resentment, making her overall appearance somewhat distorted.

Touching her brow, she reminded herself that being frequently angry was not good.

After washing her face, Sheng Anning noticed two towels hanging on the rack, one army green and the other white, guessing the white one belonged to the original host. She used it to dry her face.

Turning around, she saw Zhou Shixun chopping cabbage, his army green sweater sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing a section of his strong arms, and his movements were skilled and quick, making the cabbage shreds very uniform.

Sheng Anning inwardly admired that good-looking people indeed looked good doing anything.

Given the strained relationship between the original host and this man, she was unsure how to start a conversation. After standing with her hands behind her back for a while, she approached him, "Um… do you need any help?"

Zhou Shixun paused in his movements, looking up at Sheng Anning, "What you said yesterday is impossible."

Confused for a moment, Sheng Anning recalled the reason the original host had argued with Zhou Shixun last night; she wanted to return to the city for work because Zhou Shixun's unit arranged jobs for family members every year.

Zhou Shixun calmly rejected her, and then the original owner made a fuss at home, smashing things.

Sheng Anning felt a toothache just thinking about it. What was all this? They were already married, how could there be another lover in town!

Seeing Zhou Shixun's cold expression, she quickly waved her hands: "No, no, I know I'm not qualified for the job yet. Give it to someone who needs it. I just simply want to help you cook."

Zhou Shixun glanced at her: "No need."

Sheng Anning just stood by and watched Zhou Shixun cook. When it came to frying vegetables, Zhou Shixun saw that the oil in the tank was gone, just frowned, took out a can of lard from the cupboard, scooped out a piece and put it in the pot.

Green onions, ginger, garlic, and dried red chili peppers were added to the pot, and the aroma exploded in the air instantly, drilling straight into the nose.

Sheng Anning felt that she must be too hungry, as she was eagerly swallowing her saliva while watching a pot of ordinary stir-fried cabbage.

Lunch was very simple, a portion of braised pork that Zhou Shixun brought back from the canteen, with more fat than lean meat, the color looked dull and not very appetizing, and then there was stir-fried cabbage, with coarse grain buns as the staple food.

Sheng Anning saw Zhou Shixun heating the buns and actively cleaned up the table, arranged the stools, and went to get chopsticks.

Zhou Shixun was surprised to see the two sets of bowls and chopsticks on the table. Today's Sheng Anning was really abnormal, after all, usually, if he breathed in front of her, she would feel the air was getting dirty and smelling of the countryside's foul odor.

Silently arranging the buns and vegetables, Sheng Anning had already consciously sat down opposite, staring at the coarse grain buns on the table: "It looks so fragrant, you are really amazing."

Zhou Shixun's brow twitched, guessing that Sheng Anning's change was probably to change her strategy to achieve her own goals.

Still silently sitting down opposite Sheng Anning, he picked up a bun and started eating.

Sheng Anning didn't find it boring. Given the original owner's efforts, the man opposite must be full of guard, guessing she was playing some trick again.

Silently biting a bun, looking at the golden buns, but they were dry and hard when bitten into, and somewhat scratchy to swallow.

It was nothing like the soft, sweet cornmeal steamed buns she had eaten in the restaurant.

Stretching her neck to swallow, she quickly picked up the bowl and drank two sips of water.

Zhou Shixun glanced at Sheng Anning, lowered his eyelids, and continued to eat.

While the two were silently eating with their own thoughts, a woman outside the door shouted: "Captain Zhou, are you home?"

The voice was somewhat anxious and even had a crying tone.
